Many of us know only too well what it’s like to have our sleep disrupted by the snoring habits of partners. Statistics suggest it affects 40% of the population.

And, whilst it is not usually a cause for concern, it may sometimes suggest a bigger problem.

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder that involves short to lengthy pauses in breathing or shallow breathing and is caused by a decreased or obstructed airway passage.

They may occur 30 times or more an hour and normal breathing starts again, sometimes with a loud snort or choking noise. OSA can result in excessive daytime sleepiness and difficulty concentrating as well as high blood pressure.

It is estimated that 5% of the British population remain undiagnosed with OSA, suggesting a large number may benefit from proper screening, diagnosis and treatment.

Treatment is aimed at keeping the airway open and it may surprise you to learn that one option is available here at Sutton Orthodontics.

We recommend Sleepwell, a non-invasive and removable dental appliance, which is adjustable to achieve the best result.

Worn at night, it works by moving the lower jaw slightly forward and in a slightly open position, which opens the airway enough to allow a good passage of air and preventing the tongue falling to the back of the mouth – the reason people snore.

At your consultation, we will assess the problem, as you may need referral to a sleep clinic

Sleepwell reduces the snoring to an acceptable level and resolves the symptoms of some patients with OSA.

The device is relatively comfortable, although it might take a little time to get used to – much like wearing in a new pair of shoes. The jaw position can be adjusted by adjusting the appliance yourself.

Clinically, it has been shown to improve sleep quality and blood pressure and can also have wider reaching life-changing effects, such as improving relationships with a partner, and less daytime sleepiness.

Sleepwell should be worn for as long as necessary to resolve symptoms and for a minimum period of three months, although many patients opt to wear it for as long as they need it.

At Sutton Orthodontics, we are committed to helping patients live life to the fullest and embrace all dental innovations that help improve quality of life. This now includes getting a good night’s sleep.
